Abstract
Opus was hired to help ConAgra build a 1.5 million-square-foot dry foods distribution center on 186 acres in Frankfort, Indiana. The project was started in the summer of 2014 and completed in July 2015.

Water management on the site was challenging due to the large volume and size of pipe required. Approximately 500 acres drained through this property via an existing county legal drain. The engineer originally specified concrete pipe, but contractors were allowed to submit proposed design changes.
Poindexter Excavating submitted large-diameter HDPE dual-wall pipe from Prinsco as an alternative to concrete based on its potential to save time and reduce installation costs. HDPE offered the same or better performance and could be used with the existing specified Class 1 backfill. The cost savings and value engineering of utilizing Prinsco HDPE pipe in lieu of concrete saved the project more than 8% cost over the entire utility package amount. These savings, coupled with the performance of HDPE, played a significant role in Poindexter being chosen as the project contractor.
Project Brief
What Type of Pipe Is Used for This Kind of Stormwater Conveyance Project?
To complete this project, Poindexter Excavating had to use different sizes of Prinsco’s Goldflo® HDPE dual-wall pipe, including:
- 1,100’ — 60” Diameter (20’ watertight corrugated HDPE)
- 500′ — 48” Diameter (11′ watertight corrugated HDPE)
- 580′ — 36” Diameter (11′ watertight corrugated HDPE)
- 9,000 — 24″ Diameter (11′ watertight corrugated HDPE)
- 240′ — 15″ Diameter (20′ watertight corrugated HDPE)
- 420′ — 12″ Diameter (20′ watertight corrugated HDPE)
What Are the Differences Between HDPE Pipe and Concrete Pipe?
HDPE pipe is lightweight, durable and easy-to-handle, requiring smaller installation teams and less equipment. In this project, these factors translated to over 13% savings in installation costs compared to concrete. HDPE pipe is available in longer lengths than concrete pipe, further speeding up the installation process. Additionally, HDPE is leak-proof, more resistant to corrosion, won’t crack or chip, has a longer service life and offers better flexibility. All these properties made HDPE the ideal choice for this high-volume conveyance application.
Key Project Features
This project is a perfect example of how HDPE can effectively compete against concrete in civil commercial construction water management applications. Some of the HDPE traits that made this project a success include:
- Efficiency of installation — the contractor met the completion deadline 10 days ahead of schedule, improving overall project efficiencies
- High-volume drainage capabilities — easily met the project’s volume and performance requirements
- Cost savings — HDPE is more cost-effective than concrete, resulting in significant savings throughout the project
- Multiple diameter options — Prinsco’s Goldflo® pipe is available in a wide range of diameters, including 60”, making it ideal for high-flow, high-volume conveyance
- Longer service life — HDPE is more corrosion- and abrasion-resistant, extending its effectiveness
