Abstract
Like many college campuses, the University of Iowa in Iowa City is a busy collection of student housing, academic buildings, and parking facilities. In 2023 the university broke ground on a new six-floor Health Sciences Academic Building, located just one block away from the stadium. And when the contractor, Elder Corporation, needed to install stormwater detention, they went with Prinsco.
What made Prinsco a good fit for this work? Total package price, ease of installation, and engineering support topped the list. Since the original plans only included a simple box to represent the drainage design, Elder Corporation relied on Prinsco to design a plan that would meet their requirements and timeline.
The crowded campus location also posed another challenge: a lack of storage space for materials. To solve this, the Prinsco team at the Jesup, Iowa plant strategically timed staged deliveries of the 226 HydroStor® HS290 chambers used on the project.
That extra effort and coordination was key to bringing this project to a successful conclusion, with 226 Hydrostor HS290 chambers providing over 52,000 cubic feet of storage capacity for the university’s new Health Sciences Academic Building.
Key Project Features
- Efficient stormwater storage: 226 HydroStor HS290 stormwater chambers were installed, providing more than 52,000 cubic feet of underground storage.
- Engineering support: Because the initial project plan didn’t include plans for stormwater management, the contractor relied on Prinsco engineering to come up with the right design.
- Staged product deliveries: The university location lacked storage space for materials, so the Jesup, Iowa plant staged deliveries throughout the project.
- Strength and reliability: Meets AASHTO Section 12 loading requirements as well as ASTM F2418 and ASTM F2787 standards.
